Not to far from where I live is a State Park encompassing hundreds of acres of forests and meadows. It sits high on a bluff overlooking a river. I went there yesterday. It was a perfect late summer day. The sky was the brilliant blue as only seen in late summer with not a cloud to be seen and the sun shining brightly. There was no wind, not even a light, steady breeze. Dust motes, kicked up from the car traveling on the gravel road, hung in the air lifeless and still. There were very few vehicles in the parking area. In the quiet, I was alone.
As I meandered on one of the shorter walking trails I began to realize, while alone I had no need to be lonely. The birds were chirping and singing their special songs. Music to the ear I thought and smiled. The bright sunshine created a dappled mosaic of both intense and subdued greens on the leaves of the trees and low ground scrub bushes. Art for the eyes I thought. Occcassionally, mixed with the earthy aroma of the forest, I caught a the wafting aroma of freshly mown hay from the farm fields close to the edge of the park. I smiled as I realized being alone in the quiet was enhancing all of my other senses. As I walked around a bend on the trail I was suddenly entering a medium sized meadow. Not very big, but open. It was filled with native grasses and the last of the summer wild flowers were standing tall, bright and fragrant. I walked into the meadow and felt the warm sunshine on my face. Stopping, I turned and lifted my face to the sun. Keeping my eyes closed I could feel the warm rays of the sun as it touched every area of my exposed skin. The experienced warmed my skin but more importantly the entire experience was warming my soul.
As I continued on my journey I walked along the bluffs overlooking the river. I could see a few boats on the water below. The bluffs are high and sound travels down hill much better then up hill so the quiet remained. I had read there were about 70 nesting pairs of Bald Eagles in this area. Scanning the clear blue sky I spotted 2 adult Bald Eagles riding the thermal currents. Their wing span is impressive. Movements graceful. Sight of them Majestic.
